Severe Weather

Community Storm ShelterTo protect our residents from seasonal tornadoes, the fire department has placed five weather sirens around the city to alert residents of impending severe weather. The EMA offices in Marion & Fayette County are responsible for activating the sirens when severe weather is approaching. The sirens are tested monthly on the first Tuesday of each month, unless severe weather is expected that day.

The city also has built an above ground tornado shelter next to city hall, and this building will withstand 250+ MPH winds. The building will accommodate up to 500  people in a tornado situation if you do not have shelter at your home or work. The fire department will open the shelter and provide a firefighter, police officer, and a paramedic while the shelter is open for your safety. It will also be stocked to take care of any items you may need while at the shelter.
