Interstate-22 |
Interstate-22, formerly known as Corridor X, is part of the Appalachian Development Highway System (ADHS), which was created in 1965 within the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), to bring controlled assess highways to Appalachia. Corridor X was authorized in 1978 and will connect Birmingham, Alabama with Memphis, Tennessee. When completed the Interstate Highway system will tie together the cities of Atlanta, Birmingham and Memphis. Corridor X will go across the western hill of Alabama going through Marion and Walker counties before reaching Birmingham. Construction is now completed to Highway 129 east of Winfield. Interstate-22 then begins again west of Jasper and is completed to the east of Jasper. The route will soon be completely finished through the city of Jasper and to it's endpoint connecting to I-65 just north of Birmingham. The route of Interstate-22 roughly parallels Highway 78 and the total cost to complete Interstate-22 is approximately $650 million. Federal and State appropriations are continuing to insure that construction remains on course. This highway will be a tremendous boost to the region and increase economic development in the western hills of northern Alabama and improve the already excellent quality of life in Winfield.
